Business executives with member companies of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the US-China Business Council (USCBC), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in a private meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, on September 19, 2022.
Participating from the National Committee were Honorary Chair Carla Hills, Chair and CEO, Hills and Company; Executive Vice Chair Maurice (Hank) Greenberg, Chairman and CEO, C.V. Starr and Co.; Vice Chair Evan G. Greenberg, Chairman and CEO, CHUBB Limited and CHUBB Group; and President Stephen Orlins.
NCUSCR believes that open communications between Americans from the business community and senior levels of the Chinese government improves understanding in both communities. This senior meeting with China’s State Councilor is but one of the National Committee’s many initiatives designed to promote dialogue, examine the current challenges that face the two nations, and find ways to place bilateral relations on a better footing.
Among the suggestions offered by the National Committee’s participants were that the United States and China should cut tariffs, resume high-level dialogue including an in-person meeting between Presidents Biden and Xi, and lift travel restrictions. NCUSCR President Stephen Orlins in his concluding remarks called on both presidents to address the people of the other country. “Only if our leaders step forward are we going to be able to break this downward spiral and create a virtuous cycle.”
