Matteo Dian is an Associate Professor of History and International Relations of East Asia at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, the University of Bologna. Previously he held research and teaching positions at University of Oxford; London School of Economics and Political Science, the European University Institute and Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. He earned his PhD at the Scuola Normale Superiore (Italian Institute of Human and Social Sciences) in Florence. His latest books are Reluctant Remilitarization, The transformation of Defence Policy and Armed Forces in Japan, Germany and Italy, (with Francesco Moro e Fabrizio Coticchia. Edinburgh, Edinburgh University Press, 2023) and La Cina, gli Stati Uniti e il Futuro dell’Ordine Internazionale (“China, the United States and the Future of the International Order”, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2021). His research focuses on International Relations theory, Security in East Asia, Japanese and Chinese Foreign policies, and U.S. foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific region.
