To celebrate the release of the English-language edition of a new collection of speeches and writings by former premier Zhu Rongji during his term as vice premier of China, the National Committee worked with the China International Publishing Group, the Brookings Institution, and the Chinese Consulate General on an event at the Consulate on September 9, 2013. The book, Zhu Rongji on the Record: The Road to Reform, 1991-1997, reveals the evolution of Zhu’s thinking on issues such as financial sustainability, the role of government in China’s economic policy, and reforms to the banking and state-owned sector. The book is published by the Brookings Institution Press in cooperation with the Foreign Languages Press of the China International Publishing Group.
The event brought together a number of key figures from both sides of the Pacific, and featured speeches by Vice Minister Zhou Mingwei; Dr. Henry Kissinger, former U.S. Secretary of State; Ambassador Cui Tiankai, China’s Ambassador to the United States; Kenneth Lieberthal, of the Brookings Institution; and Deputy Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui. Premier Zhu delivered a pre-recorded video message, and National Committee Vice President Jan Berris served as emcee.
