President Trump ended the Fulbright program to China and Hong Kong in 2020, pausing a longstanding avenue for academic exchange between the United States and China. Today, the numbers of American students studying in China have not yet bounced back to pre-COVID levels. As geopolitical tensions persist, can sustained academic exchange heal the damage done to the relationship during this period of distrust?
Cui Ge joins the National Committee in an interview recorded on December 18, 2024 to discuss the enduring value of academic exchange between the United States and China.

Dr. Cui Ge is a Professor and the Deputy Director of the Center for Asia-Pacific and Global Strategies at Dalian University of Technology in China. His teaching and research focus on U.S. culture and diplomacy, Sino-U.S. relations, and U.S. foreign policy towards Africa. He earned his Ph.D. in American Studies from Beijing Foreign Studies University.
Currently, Dr. Cui is a Visiting Research Scholar at the Department of Political Science at Columbia University for the 2024-2025 academic year. Previously, he served as a Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University from 2015 to 2016, and as a Visiting Ph.D. Scholar at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University from 2008 to 2009. He has also delivered lectures at James Madison University and East Asia University in Japan.
